China and the West – Mankind Evolving (1970) by Anthony Dyson & Bernard Towers – Garnstone Press
Sold by Crappy Old Books – champions of yellowed pages and post-imperial pessimism.

A fascinating, occasionally frazzled snapshot of Cold War-era cultural comparison, China and the West – Mankind Evolving sees Dyson and Towers trying to map the ideological, moral, and philosophical gulfs (and bridges) between East and West. Written in 1970, when Mao was still very much a going concern and Western liberalism was wobbling on its heels, this book is part anthropology, part theological rumination, and part speculative sociology.

Expect lofty prose, sweeping generalisations, and the kind of earnest mid-century analysis that comes with pipe smoke and cautious optimism. This Garnstone Press edition? Dog-eared, possibly tea-dunked, and with the smell of someone else’s bookshelf baked in.

Crappy Old Books – Reading the past so you don’t have to live in the present.

The book is near new, but has suffered slightly from some sort of environmental change resulting in the dust jacket being a bit wrinkled and the hard back covers not laying flat like they should. However, its only slight and other than that its like the book has not been read. Its not water damage as there is no staining. Its possible the book was stored incorrectly for some years in a pile in which there was not an even pressure over the whole of the volume, only near the spine end, resulting in the outer covers spraying out and distorting very slighly leaving the book with a slightly springy feeling. You can’t really tell from the cover, but there is a hint of it at the top of the image where there are lighter and darker waves. Its really quite minimal, but sort of noticable if your a collector after archival specimens for some form of clever person library collection.
